in the event a virus does make its to your computer, your data remains safe!
The most common Internet pest today is malware.
The difference between malware, spyware and a virus is as follows:
- Malware - Malicious code made to simply slow down
the performance of your software and/or operating system. Can usually
be removed and is not usually data destructive.
- Spyware - Spyware programs can collect and report
personal information including Internet surfing habits, redirect you to websites
you did not intend on going to as well as blindly cause viruses and other
malware to get onto your computer. Spyware can also usually be removed without
problems.
- Viruses - Scripted code made to write over
existing software and data. Damage to data is usually imminent. Viruses can get into
your computer from many sources, including but not
limited to online downloads, cds, dvds and portable hard drives. If you think
you have a virus, backup all of your data right away to ensure you don’t lose
everything.
If you think or know you have a virus try to
backup your data immediately. Then turn off your computer to avoid further system
damage. Network Rescue has a very high success rate of data recovery in the
event you are unable to backup your data, but as viruses differ in form and
destructivity data recovery is not always guaranteed.
